Hi all, I just started guitar lesssons a month ago (4 lessons, 2 hrs total lesson time), and aside from a few frustrations, I'm lovin the hell out of it. The few questions I have are:

1. I'm 50...sometimes I feel that I'm too old to learn to play well, but I do have trouble with things like dexterity, stretches, speed and accuracy. Am I too old to get started in this?

2. I am having trouble with simple Barre chords and smooth chord progressions, is this normal?

3. any tips on how not to get lost on the neck? I find myself going to fret 5 instead of 3 for example...and similarly, i lose track of what string I'm on, especially while using a pick.

4. I understand that it takes time and practice, but damn those muted and buzzing strings bug me...any tips?
Thanks in advance for any replies

1) having this issues are very common when playing a new instrument. Don't let this dissuade you from playing. No you are not too old. One of my friends started playing at 56. He is now a damn good guitarist.

2) Very normal. Remember you are training your hands to do something that is not typically done by your hands. For bar chords try using a capo, it might help with changes. To switch between chords, just move slowly, and repetitively.

3) Sounds like you are pushing yourself too fast. try slowing down. Also practice your fretboard when ever you have the chance. You don't have to have the guitar plugged in to practice. If you don't like using a pick, then use a finger style.

4) The muting and buzzing can be caused by many factors. Bad set up (Action being too high, or low) Or lack of finger strength.
